The Faculty of Law invites applications for a full-time 2-year term, teaching-intensive position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2026, or on a date mutually agreed upon. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This position is fully funded by the Marcel A. Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law https://www.desautelscentre.ca/. It has been established to meet urgent teaching demands, support strategic research in private law, and further the Faculty’s commitments as outlined in the Faculty of Law Strategic Plan and the University of Manitoba’s institutional mission of Truth and Reconciliation, ethical leadership, and social responsibility.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will contribute to all three pillars of academic life: teaching, research, and service.

Teaching:

The position is designed to support instructional needs in high-demand core areas of private law including first year private law curriculum (contracts, torts, or property) and upper year curriculum.

Teaching needs across a potentially broad range of courses, but housed within the program, of the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law. Immediate instructional needs include:

• Negotiations
• Private law foundations and core private law courses
• Corporations law and commercial law
• “Law in practice” clinics, courses, competitions
• Legal methods and legal systems
• Professional responsibility and ethics


Research:

The successful candidate will demonstrate an emerging or established research program in one or more of the following areas in an area related to their teaching expertise or preferences.

The appointee will be supported in producing peer-reviewed publications, securing research funding, and advancing the Desautels Centre's national and international reputation in private law research.

Service:

The candidate will contribute to faculty governance and institutional service. Engagement with the Desautels Centre’s entrepreneurial communities, advancing Indigenous economic reconciliation, and policy innovation will be encouraged.

Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate:

· A strong academic background with a J.D. (or equivalent), and a completed or near-completed Ph.D. in Law or related field; significant practice experience will be considered in lieu of doctoral credentials or we will alternatively consider a combination of Masters level degree plus work experience
· Evidence of or potential for teaching excellence in the areas outlined above
· A promising or established research record
· Commitment to collegial service
