Position Description
The Faculty of Arts, Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Calgary invites applications for a limited term position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching), in the area of sociocultural anthropology. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024. We are seeking a scholar who will have the primary responsibility of teaching courses in sociocultural anthropology. In addition, the incumbent will also be involved in extra-curricular events on campus and within the broader community with the goal to sustain a vibrant program. Mentorship of undergraduate students and service to the department, faculty, and University is also expected.

The preferred candidate will have earned a PhD degree in sociocultural anthropology. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate teaching excellence by presenting an outstanding record of teaching effectiveness, evidence of pedagogical innovation, experience with developing undergraduate curricula, and advising of students. We are seeking an individual capable of teaching a wide variety of sociocultural anthropology courses. Ideally the candidate should be able to teach courses in at least one of the following areas: anthropology of religion, anthropology of health, environmental anthropology, or courses focusing on the experiences, cultures, and worldviews of Indigenous people.

This instructor’s position is intended for two years. The teaching load includes seven courses per year with one course reduction for the first year. Three courses are normally taught in the Fall term and three in the Winter term while the seventh course is taught in the Spring.
