Job Description
The University of Victoria School of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track teaching stream faculty position in Piano, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The expected start date is 1 January 2027 or as negotiated. 

Salary Range  
The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $108,000 - $134,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.  

General Information
The UVic School of Music is dedicated to experiential learning and training for musicians and music scholars, turning passion into profession. We are proud to be the only “All Steinway School of Music” in Canada. The School is home to 45 performers, composers, educators, theorists, musicologists, and professional staff, as well as 200 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students. We offer Bachelor of Music degrees in composition, music education, performance, musicology and sound studies, and musical arts along with a combined degree in Music and Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. The School offers graduate degrees in composition, performance, musicology and sound studies, and music technology. Requirements

Qualifications:

The School is interested in candidates who have:

  • Master’s degree, Doctorate preferred (ABD considered)
  • A significant national/international record of performance as a pianist
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and the ability to teach piano successfully at the university level
  • Demonstrated capacity to teach in other areas related to core School of Music curricula.

The successful candidate will be an active solo and collaborative performer, seeking to build a locally and internationally recognized reputation of excellence through scholarship and creative activity.

They will teach applied piano lessons at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will successfully recruit piano students and maintain a strong piano studio. Further teaching duties will include courses related to music performance - such as collaborative piano or piano literature - and one of the School’s other areas: Theory and Composition, Musicology and Sound Studies, Music Education, or Music Technology.

Service responsibilities include committee membership, participation in School and Faculty meetings, jury and audition adjudication.

Applicants must display the required professionalism to operate in a collegial academic environment, with evidence of collaboration considered an asset.

The Office of the Vice-President Indigenous (OVPI) has introduced the Indigenous Citizenship Declaration (ICD) Policy (GV0810) to affirm declarations of Indigenous citizenship, membership and belonging where these claims result in material advantages, such as employment in an Indigenous-specific position. At this stage, no further action is required of candidates. Those shortlisted candidates who meet the requirements established by the ICD Policy will proceed through the hiring process.
