COSTUME STUDIES INSTRUCTOR – LIMITED TERM APPOINTMENT

The Faculty of Arts and Social Science is a dynamic body of students, faculty, and staff arranged into upwards of twenty programs and departments, many offering graduate degrees. The Fountain School of Performing Arts is the only university-level performing arts school east of Montreal, facilitating a range of new opportunities to students of Music, Theatre and Film Studies. Each year, the School presents a wide variety of productions, including 3 theatre plays and one opera.
The Fountain School of Performing Arts (FSPA) at Dalhousie University invites applications for a ten-month 100% full-time limited-term appointment, at the rank of Instructor in Costume Studies, commencing on August 1, 2025. The position is subject to budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching the equivalent of 4 full credit core courses in Costume Studies. Duties will include lecture preparations and technical demonstrations to effectively instruct applied course material relating to contemporary garment construction techniques, contemporary pattern drafting techniques, draping theory and techniques, appropriate course assignments relating to discipline, and the evaluation of students’ work. Duties also include participation in theatrical productions and costume coordination.
Qualifications expected are MA or MFA in Theatre, Costume Studies, or related discipline, with substantial professional experience in clothing construction techniques, pattern drafting of contemporary clothing design, and firsthand knowledge and experience in costuming for theatre productions. Candidates with a BA or BFA in Theatre, Costume Studies or related discipline with equivalent professional experience as listed above, will be considered. Evidence of effective teaching ability and experience at a post-secondary level is required.
