Lecturer or Assistant Professor, German

Acadia University

Acadia University acknowledges that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which the Mi’kmaq, Wəlastəkwiyik, and Peskotomuhkatiyik Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1726. These treaties did not imply or affirm the surrender or transfer of land to the British, but recognized Mi’kmaq title and set the rules for what was to be a long-standing relationship between nations. Acknowledging the land that we are on means that we are working towards decolonization across campus.
The German Studies Program is part of Acadia University’s Languages and Literatures programming, and it offers students a combination of language, literature, and culture courses toward a major or minor degree in German. In their first-year students acquire basic communication skills in German. After three years of study, students achieve the necessary language skills to fully function in a German-speaking environment.
The German Studies Program seeks a candidate to hold a Contractually-Limited Term (24-month) appointment in German Studies. The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in German Studies, although ABD candidates may be considered. They should have native or near-native proficiency in German, a good knowledge of English, and experience teaching courses in 20th-century German literature as well as in German language courses at all levels. Experience in the didactics of DaF, Comparative Literatures, or European Studies would be considered advantageous by the selection committee.
Position Start Date: 1 July 2024
How to Apply
Applications should be submitted in a single PDF document to Faculty.Careers@AcadiaU.ca and should include the following:
• position number, in the subject line of the submission email
• a cover letter and curriculum vitae
• a teaching dossier (demonstrating prior experience and teaching approach; 4 pages maximum)
• the names, addresses, and contact information of three academic references (letters will be requested if applicants are short-listed)

Please Note
Candidates should not submit student evaluations/student surveys or related data; any such information received will not be reviewed by the selection committee, due to the growing evidence that student surveys are inherently and significantly biased. Receipt of applications will be acknowledged via email.

The form, which includes a provision for not self-identifying, will be held in confidence, used only for employment equity purposes, and destroyed at the end of the selection process. Failure to submit a completed form by the closing date will result in the disqualification of a candidate’s application.

Acadia University invites applications from all qualified individuals; however, Canadians and permanent residents shall be given priority. The University encourages applications from Indigenous people; African Canadians; African Nova Scotians; persons with disabilities; visible minorities; women; persons of any minority sexuality, gender identity or gender expression; and all intersections of these identities.
