About the Position
The Communication and Media Studies (COMS) program in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University invites applications from qualified candidates for a one-year Limited Term Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, beginning August 1, 2026.

We seek a colleague whose teaching and scholarship engage the intersections of media, culture, and power in global and transnational contexts. The successful candidate will teach a 3.0-credit load (six 0.5-credit course sections, all in person, in some cases including two sections of the same course) across the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 terms. Teaching will be drawn from the program’s advanced undergraduate offerings, and may include courses in such areas as Communication, Culture and Identity; Diaspora and Communication; Media and Conflict; Communication and Discourse; Media Theory and History; Platform and Instructure Studies.

Course assignments will be determined in consultation with the Program Head based on the candidate's strengths and program needs. The appointment also includes service expectations appropriate to a limited-term position, including regular office hours and participation in program activities. It is expected all courses will be offered in-person.

About the Academic Unit
The COMS program is housed in Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication (SJC) and Faculty of Public and Global Affairs (FPGA). SJC is home to vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs in Communication and Media Studies, Journalism, and Media Production and Design. COMS faculty members are internationally recognized scholars of media, technology, culture and politics, and our program has a long record of service and leadership in Canadian
communication and media studies through such institutions as the Canadian Communication Association and the Canadian Journal of Communication.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD in Communication, Media Studies, or a cognate field, or be near completion (ABD candidates with a confirmed defence date will be considered). The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Expertise in one or more of the position’s core areas, such as communication, culture and identity; diaspora and communication; media and conflict;     communication and discourse; media history; platform and critical computation studies.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness and potential for teaching excellence at the undergraduate level.
- Excellent ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the unit
- An emerging record of scholarship relevant to the position’s core areas.
