President and Vice Chancellor

Algoma University

Algoma University, established in Sault Ste. Marie in 1965, is an innovative institution with a dual Special Mission to serve as a teaching-oriented university while cultivating cross-cultural learning between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The University currently provides students with rich learning and research opportunities in a range of liberal arts, sciences and professional disciplines; including degrees and certificates provided through the Faculties of Science, Social Sciences and Humanities. The University offers endless opportunities for students to learn inside and outside of the classroom. Experiential learning and student research opportunities are critical elements of Algoma’s approach, helping students apply what they learn in “real world” settings. An ambitious internationalization strategy is bringing significant new mobility opportunities for students, faculty and staff.

With campuses located in Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton and Timmins, Algoma University is committed to being a welcoming, inclusive, safe, and respectful learning community; one that values the opportunities to learn from and with students, staff and visitors from all parts of the world. Currently, Algoma University is home to over 5,000 students representing over 50 different countries, more than 3000 full-time and part-time faculty and over 150 support staff and administrative personnel (consisting of a mix of unionized support staff, managers, directors and senior executive).

In 2023, the university updated its ambitious Strategic Plan which commits Algoma University to specific actions within four strategic directions and priorities: Lead Transformative, Cross-Cultural Learning in a Quality University Experience; Learn From, In and With Community; Share Our Stories: Past, Present and Future; and Continue to Build Inclusive and Inspiring Teaching, Learning, and Working Environments.

Algoma’s Presidential Search Advisory Group (PSAG) has begun the recruitment of the university’s next President and Vice-Chancellor. This individual will champion the university’s reputation and continued evolution, locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally, and ensure the university maintains its leadership and progress on the four strategic directions and priorities identified in the most recent strategic plan. The President will nurture a collegial atmosphere that promotes collaboration, transparency, and integrity. They will foster a culture that attracts and retains talented students and ensures services are provided for a first-rate student experience, while also attracting and retaining excellent faculty and staff, including a high-performing senior leadership team.
