Research Associate, Biochemistry and Microbiology Biology

University of Calgary

The Research Associate reports to the Principal Investigator and collaborates with researchers across computational biology, immunology, and translational medicine.

The position involves managing complex bioinformatics workflows, integrating multi-omic datasets, and contributing to high-throughput immunomics research. The work is primarily computational but requires interaction with wet lab researchers for data interpretation. Peak periods may occur around grant deadlines, publication submissions, and major project milestones. The role may require flexibility in working hours to accommodate international collaborations across the UK, Canada, and Europe.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Developing and applying bioinformatics pipelines for immunopeptidomic, genomic, and proteomic data analysis to support research objectives
Integrating multi-omic datasets to identify potential vaccine targets and therapeutic candidates, ensuring high-quality data processing and interpretation
Building computational models for antigen presentation and immune response prediction, contributing to advancements in predictive immunology
Collaborating on research projects at local, regional, national, and international levels, ensuring computational aspects align with broader research goals
Training students and postdocs in software best practices while maintaining and optimizing the code base of a growing bioinformatics platform
Bridging interdisciplinary teams across computational biology, life sciences, and computer science to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange
Preparing and contributing to research publications, grant writing, and conference presentations to disseminate findings and secure funding opportunities

Qualifications / Requirements:
- MSc in Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, or a related field with the experience to address key responsibilities, required
- Proficiency in Python or R for bioinformatics applications, required
- 4 years of experience with bioinformatics programming, working with immunomics and especially immunopeptidomics datasets, required
- 3 years of experience AI and machine learning applications in biological research is an asset. Particularly experience cross-cutting across AI and software engineering teams, required
- Wet lab experience is an asset, particularly in immunopeptidomics, proteomics, or molecular biology, as an opportunity for growth
- Strong background in multi-omic data integration and analysis
- Familiarity with mass spectrometry and high-throughput sequencing data analysis
