Position Description:
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at McMaster University invites applications for a tenure-track research faculty position in Actuarial Science at the level of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2027.
We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline, and a demonstrated record of research excellence in any major area of actuarial science. Particular interest will be given to candidates whose research advances modern actuarial science through innovative applications in areas such as insurance analytics, predictive modelling, climate risk, artificial intelligence/machine learning, financial risk, or other emerging areas relevant to the actuarial profession. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, and contribute to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will join the instructional team of McMaster’s award-winning Actuarial and Financial Mathematics (AFM) program, one of Canada's leading actuarial science programs, and contribute to the continued growth and success of actuarial education and research at McMaster. Professional actuarial qualifications or relevant industry experience are considered strong assets but are not required.
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics currently has 37 full-time faculty members, approximately 80 graduate students, and 15 postdoctoral fellows. The Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics group is nationally and internationally recognized for its research excellence, strong industry engagement, and commitment to student success. In addition to the priority area for this search, related research interests within the Department include computational statistics, mathematical biology, and several areas of applied mathematics, providing numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across a broad range of quantitative disciplines.
