Tenure Track Position - Diversity and Social Justice Studies Program - Faculty of Arts

University of Prince Edward Island

The Diversity and Social Justice Studies Program (DSJS) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is seeking a tenure track faculty member at the level of Assistant Professor, with a specialization in technology and social justice, for a new position in the program. Candidates’ scholarship and activities should critically address the ways in which technology(ies) are presented as the solutions to current pressing social issues: e.g., climate change, energy use, viruses and pandemics, reproductive justice, food insecurity—and their implications for understandings of identity categories such as gender, sexuality, race, disability, etc.

Area and focus are open, but candidates should exemplify an interdisciplinary humanities or social science approach to teaching and scholarship. The successful candidate will join a thriving undergraduate program comprised of one full time faculty member and many faculty who teach cross listed courses from across the Faculty of Arts (Sociology / Anthropology, History, Psychology, Economics, Philosophy). The new faculty member will be expected to teach core courses as well as design new courses in their area(s) of expertise that align with the major emphases of the program.

The successful candidate may be expected to teach in graduate programs in the Faculty of Arts.

More information about the program can be found at https://www.upei.ca/programs/diversity-social-justice-studies or by contacting Ann Braithwaite, Ph.D., at abraithwaite@upei.ca. The successful candidate will begin August 1 or shortly thereafter, potentially negotiable. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a completed Ph.D. in an area focused on issues of social justice. Disciplinary background is open, but preference will be given to candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds that cross multiple theoretical approaches from the humanities or social sciences. Applicants should have a passion for teaching, a robust and promising record of scholarly activity, a strong commitment to collaborative relationships and activities on campus, and a dedication to helping continue to grow this dynamic program.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit the following in a single file: a letter of application, an up-to-date CV, the names and contact information of 3 academic references, a statement of teaching philosophy and a description of scholarly endeavours, samples of scholarly publications and syllabi of courses taught if available, and a statement explaining how principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion inform their teaching and scholarship to:
