Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Criminology in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2026 subject to final budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.
The Department of Criminology seeks to strengthen its capacity in critical quantitative criminology. We invite applicants who conduct research which advances critical understandings and innovative uses of quantitative methods for understanding crime, criminalization, and/or crime control. Successful candidates will also teach students to critically understand and evaluate quantitative data and methods through our core methods course, CRM 204: Criminal Justice Research and Statistics.
Substantive areas of research are open, but we are particularly interested in scholars who can bring an awareness of the global and international dimensions of crime, justice, and social change. We value scholars whose teaching and research recognize that criminological issues are shaped by global connections.
In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:
an active research program that advances quantitative criminological scholarship while deepening understandings of justice. We seek a scholar with strong empirical expertise whose work critically engages with theoretical, policy, and global social justice questions. These qualities align with the department's critical intellectual culture;
An ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in criminology, including CRM204: Criminal Justice Research and Statistics. Candidates will also be expected to contribute to teaching our introductory courses. We especially value creative, inclusive, and community-involved pedagogies that connect students' learning to real-world contexts;
an ability to contribute to graduate supervision and teaching in the MA Criminology and Social Justice program, fostering research that bridges scholarly and public engagement;
a doctoral degree in Criminology or a closely related field by the appointment date of July 1, 2026.
a commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Criminology Department and the University through collegial service.
Our committee recognizes that scholars have varying career paths and that career interruptions can be part of an excellent academic record. Candidates are encouraged to provide any relevant information about their experience and/or career interruptions.
