TERM ASSISTANT TEACHING PROFESSOR IN MUSIC
The Department of Culture and Media Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick (Canada), invites applications for a 9-month limited term appointment at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in Music. The start date of the position is August 1, 2025. Position is subject to final budgetary approval.
The salary range and fringe benefits for this position is defined in the Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers (AUNBT) 2022 - 2025 Collective Agreement sections 35 and 36B.
We seek a candidate with a PhD or DM in Music with a focus on Canadian music, electronic music, community music, music ensembles and/or conducting. Other related disciplines may be considered and terminal degrees must be completed (or near completion) at the time of application. An excellent teaching record is also required and a significant performance or practical experience in music creation (composition, electronic music), community music development would be an important asset. Post-secondary experience in student mentoring and advising, especially of students from underrepresented backgrounds will be an asset.
The successful candidate's research/creative and teaching areas will contribute to our Music Studies Minor program as well as to the existing departmental areas of specialization in Media Arts and Cultures and Comparative Cultural Studies. Teaching will include undergraduate survey courses, and topical surveys, general music classes, and other curricular offerings according to the candidate’s area of expertise and the needs of the department. As director of the Music Studies Minor Program, the candidate will also play an important role in coordinating the music curriculum at the undergraduate level. Administration and advising of the minor program and an overseeing responsibility of Music instructors, support staff and assets (music library and instrument bank) come under the position. The selected candidate will also serve on committees for the department, faculty, and university. The successful candidate will foster a relationship with UNB’s Centre for Musical Arts, recognized for its promotion of music education and appreciation through concerts, lessons and summer camps.
Music Studies is housed in the Dept. of Culture & Media Studies where our interdisciplinary programs combine critical and creative work, encouraging students to become both scholars and authors of cultural studies and media. Bringing together perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, and fine arts, and grounded in the Canadian tradition of communication studies, our programs are built around the assumption that critical thinking about today's cultures benefits significantly from practical experience with the processes and technologies of cultural production. The University of New Brunswick’s Fredericton campus is located in Fredericton, a city known for the excellent quality and significant breadth of its music scene.
