Assistant Professor, Distance Education

Athabasca University

Athabasca University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS) offers Master's and Doctoral Degrees as well as Graduate Certificates and Diplomas in Distance Education with the aim of advancing open, distance, and online teaching and learning at all levels of education. We invite applications from Ph.D. or Ed.D. prepared scholars to fill two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2021. These are full-time positions located in Alberta. Athabasca University is a fully-accredited, comprehensive academic and research post-secondary institution with a commitment to facilitating open access to education. All teaching is online.

The first position requires expertise in emerging technologies, pedagogies enabled by these technologies, and techno-pedagogical models that afford alternative forms of assessment. One dimension in the Athabasca University Strategic Plan is "moving beyond the norm to transform lives and communities" by embracing innovation and harnessing our creativity and knowledge to reach new heights in inclusive and digitally enabled distributed learning and research. The world is in the fourth industrial revolution where emerging technologies that use Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Internet of Things, Robotics, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, etc. are being used by many sectors of society. Online and distance education need to take advantage of the emerging technologies and innovative/disruptive pedagogies to design and deliver quality learning experiences for learners.

The ideal candidate for the second position will have a demonstrated interest in the human experience of education in an environment of change. A research program exploring the relationship between education and society, emerging and diverse online pedagogical approaches, and/or education processes and outcomes for students and graduates experiencing a dynamic, complex, and diverse society would be an asset. Subject-matter expertise should cover distance and online education for adults and children, education and society, and/or education innovation and transformation.

Successful candidates for these positions will have experience in developing and facilitating online pedagogies and researching methodologies using emerging technologies. In addition, they will bring experience in supervising theses and dissertations in those areas. The ideal candidates will show evidence of, or potential for, research productivity through successful research grant applications and peer-reviewed publications.
