Instructor – Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (CRDS)

The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure track appointment at the rank of Instructor. The major contributions of this position will be in teaching in inquiry-based undergraduate programs delivered on campus and through on-line modalities along with mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. The program includes an innovative community practicum component that this role will be expected to contribute to sustaining and building through direct undergraduate supervision during the practicum and the maintenance of positive community relationships.

This position is part of Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies (CRDS), which includes the Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation (four-year and two-year post-diploma degree); Master of Science (thesis-based); and PhD program. CRDS is an innovative, dynamic and community engaged program of academic and professional inquiry aimed at interrogation of understandings and experiences of ‘disability’ as a social, cultural, economic and political phenomenon. Through these offerings, CRDS prepares the next generation of social justice practitioners, advocates, policy makers and scholars through course, community-based research and practicum experiences in a wide range of community services and organizations.

Qualifications include a doctorate (PhD or equivalent) degree in a related discipline, experience in the disability field, and a minimum of 2 years of post-secondary teaching experience. Demonstrated online teaching experience is required. This role requires expertise in one or more areas of disability, related to life span development, community development, advocacy and activism, leadership and innovation, professional and research ethics, and inclusive practices. Areas of expertise may include mad studies, queer studies, and critical disability studies.

The Instructor role includes 75% of time dedicated to teaching in the CRDS programs. While the primary role is teaching, Instructors are also expected to collaborate in other scholarly activities and contribute to service activities within the Department of Community Health Sciences. Experience in inter-disciplinary partnerships in community contexts and/or inter-faculty collaboration in advancing critical disability studies is an asset. A working knowledge of distributed education strategies and a demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a collaborative culture are expected.
