LIMITED-TERM FACULTY POSITION IN CRIMINOLOGY

The School of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts at Laurentian University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a twelve-month limited term faculty position with a six course (18 credit) teaching workload at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Criminology. The preferred start date is August 1, 2023

Candidates must have completed a PhD degree by the start date of the appointment and relevant experience can be an asset. The successful candidate will have the following essential qualifications:


• A PhD in Criminology, Sociology or in a related field. Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) applicants with another relevant terminal degree or with Indigenous knowledge such as a Traditional Knowledge Keeper or Indigenous Language Speaker deemed equivalent to a terminal degree, will also be considered.
• Extensive teaching experience in one or both of the following areas: 1) Anti-colonialism and Restorative Justice, which may include racialization and policing, human rights, Indigenous knowledges, laws and self-determination, First Nations, Métis or Inuit ethics, and/or decolonial perspectives on settler state violence. 2) Disability and the Criminal Justice System, which may include the criminalization of mental health disorders, the incarceration of marginal populations, policing of poverty, human services and the law, preventative health, equity and public policy.
• Candidates who self-identify as Indigenous shall be subject to a process of verification whereby acceptance by an Indigenous community is confirmed, in part, via referee from a member of the Indigenous community (reserve, urban, an organization, etc.) with whom the applicant identifies.
• Evidence of the ability to effectively teach undergraduate courses with a commitment to pedagogical and academic excellence, promoting a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment, and advancing Laurentian University’s bilingual and tricultural mandates.
• Evidence of relevant research and scholarship with the potential to work collaboratively with colleagues and build internal and external interdisciplinary or intersectoral collaborations.
• Commitment to promoting a diverse, inclusive and vibrant academic and work environment.
• Though the teaching for this position is in English, the selected candidate is expected to have active knowledge of both official languages (functional bilingualism) or passive comprehension of the French/English languages (receptive bilingualism).



Since the Criminology program is located in the Sociology unit, part of the teaching load could include relevant courses in Sociology. The successful candidate will participate actively, and on site, in the administration of the program and the supervision of students. In addition to active engagement and participating in teaching, the incumbent will be expected to make contributions through service to the School, Faculty, University, and broader community.

With bilingual and tricultural faculty, the School of Social Sciences offers programs in English and French. Apart from undergraduate programs in Criminology; Economics; Equity, Diversity and Human Rights; Gerontology; Psychology; and Sociology; the School offers a PhD in Human Studies and Interdisciplinarity.
