Assistant Professor, Teaching Track, Sociology

The Department of Sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada invites applications for a full-time, teaching-stream faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, beginning July 1, 2020.

We seek an individual with a PhD in Sociology or related discipline to teach a variety of undergraduate courses in sociology. We are especially interested in candidates who have successful experiences teaching high-enrolment courses (100-500 students) to Level 1 and 2 undergraduate students. Possible courses may include introductory sociology, sociological theory and methods, and a variety of substantive courses in sociology. We seek a candidate with expertise in pedagogy, strong communication skills, and a strong record of success in the university classroom. We consider a candidate’s ability to use online modes of learning to be an asset. We expect the successful candidate to have a commitment to professional development and mentorship of students, and establishing a respectful learning environment for all students with an equal exchange of ideas.

McMaster Sociology is home to leading scholars in a wide variety of sociological subfields, with core strengths in the sociology of Gender, Sexuality and Family; Political Sociology, Social Movements and Social Policy; Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration; Social Psychology and Mental Health; Sociology of Work and Occupations; as well as Indigenous-Settler Relations; Education, Culture & Knowledge; and Crime & Justice. All candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and be strongly committed to undergraduate teaching excellence. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, a copy of their curriculum vitae, and a teaching dossier. The teaching dossier should include: (a) a one-to-two page statement of teaching philosophy; (b) a one-page summary of prior experience in teaching (including class sizes), and any prior/planned activity in the area of scholarship of teaching and learning; (c) a summary of all available teaching evaluations; and (d) a one-page statement on the role of equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching.
