Applications are invited for a limited term (3 years) 50% FTE Instructor position in the College of Sustainability. The College of Sustainability is internationally recognized for its innovative approach to interdisciplinary undergraduate education. The College offers an undergraduate Environment, Sustainability and Society program which students complete as a double major paired with one of seven Bachelors’ degree programs across five Dalhousie Faculties. The ESS program is offered in conjunction with over forty other subject areas. Over 40 Dalhousie professors are presently cross-appointed to the College, which provides an interdisciplinary forum for collaborative learning and teaching on the most pressing issues of our time. This position includes teaching responsibilities (60% of duties) along with significant academic administrative responsibilities (40% of duties). Applicants should demonstrate accomplishment in both areas. For both teaching and administrative duties, this position requires expertise in problem- and project-based learning approaches, project management and planning, broad research methods, and group learning and teaching approaches.

Teaching will be at the undergraduate level, and evidence of previous teaching effectiveness should be provided, including experience of teaching problem-based and project-based approaches, project management, and diverse research methods. The College of Sustainability seeks candidates with a strong interest in and capacity for collaborative interdisciplinary team-teaching. Candidates must hold a masters degree in a sustainability-related field. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of how their academic background interacts with other disciplines and traditions in the pursuit of a sustainable future and demonstrate effectiveness in collaborative team-teaching. Candidates must also have formal training in curriculum development at the post-secondary level, and demonstrate a record of effectiveness in leading curriculum development work, including curriculum mapping, definition of learning outcomes, identification and tracking of student competencies, and development of student screening protocols for literacy, numeracy and other skills. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a professional interest in scholarship of teaching and learning related to their activities within the College.

Teaching responsibilities include co-teaching core SUST-designated classes in the ESS Major; these are collaboratively-team taught by multi-disciplinary teams of instructors, supported by graduate teaching assistants. Enrolments are typically 160-300 in first year classes, and 60-90 in upper year classes. Teaching may also include SUST elective courses (12-36 students). This position will include assigned teaching equivalent to 1.5 credits per year, plus honors thesis and/or project supervision. Initial teaching assignments include co-teaching SUST 3000.03 Environmental Decision-making (core, 0.5 credits); SUST 3XXX.03 Food Systems and Sustainability (elective, 0.5 credits); plus, an additional half-credit equivalent course.

Administrative duties include routine College duties and participation in special projects in the College. Routine duties will include: co-planning and co-leading a 1 day annual Curriculum Development Workshop; participate in monthly curriculum meetings; participate in standing and ad hoc committees; attend weekly check-in meetings; attend other College and university wide meetings; support College life through attending designated ESS Thursday evening lectures; TA appreciation events; CoS Fall Orientation event; designated student engagement events; one spring Convocation ceremony and the CoS Convocation reception (May-June convocation).

Specific responsibilities of this position will include leading various curriculum development projects in the College including curriculum mapping, definition of course and program-level learning outcomes, developmental evaluation of programs (including the RBC Sustainability Leadership Certificate), and development of protocols and tools for student skills screening, tracking of competencies, and summative assessment.
