The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning is dedicated to strengthening teaching and learning cultures, communities and practices. The Institute supports the teaching development of instructors, promotes high-impact student experiences such as experiential learning, ensures the meaningful integration of learning technologies, and fosters research to better understand and improve student learning. The Taylor Institute works to facilitate conversations, build communities, link networks, and catalyze a culture of evidence-based teaching and learning across the University. Its mandate embodies the University’s three foundational commitments of sharpening focus on research and scholarship, enriching the quality and breadth of learning, and fully integrating the university with the community.
The University of Calgary, and the Taylor Institute now seeks applications for a 3-year, contingent-term academic appointment as an educational development consultant (online and blended learning), with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2021 or at a mutually agreeable time. The salary range for this position is $79,325 to $95,000 per annum and will be negotiated based on the candidate’s skill and experience.
Reporting to the Academic Lead (Learning Technologies and Design) the educational development consultant will:
• Create, lead and evaluate educational development programs, to help advance the university’s priorities in online and blended learning
• Lead and evaluate a 3-year program to support the development of 40-60 high-quality online courses at the University of Calgary in collaboration with the Learning Technology and Design team and Educational Leader in Residence (Online and Blended Learning), using an interdisciplinary cohort-based model
• Coordinate and lead a team of graduate student learning technology production coaches to support online learning across disciplines
• Connect to existing teaching and learning networks to understand and respond to the needs of academic staff across disciplines as it relates to online and blended learning
• Develop evidence-based resources to support educational and/or curriculum development programs and knowledge mobilization, to help advance online and blended learning, including a new TI website dedicated to providing professional learning and promoting research-informed practices in online and blended learning
• Develop a workshop series dedicated to providing professional learning and promoting research-informed practices in online and blended learning
• Collaborate with faculty and staff across the TI and University community to support online and blended learning, including working with the Educational Leader in Residence (Online Learning) to advise on policies and procedures, and to develop an institutional plan for online and blended learning
• Collaborate with academic units to advance online and blended learning
• Consult with individual and small groups of academic staff to strengthen approaches to online and blended learning
• Consult with individuals and small groups of academic staff regarding evaluating and providing evidence of teaching expertise, especially within an online and blended learning context
• Provide leadership and guidance in the educational development activities of the TI and other academic units
• Provide educational and/or curriculum development leadership and expertise on departmental, faculty and institution-level teaching and learning committees, action groups, and task forces, to help advance online and blended learning
• Support a culture of collaboration and respect both within and beyond the TI
• Actively contribute leadership and service to the TI, University and field of educational development (locally, provincially, nationally and/or internationally)
• Engage in and advance scholarship related to online and blended learning in postsecondary education.
The ideal candidate is a growth-oriented educator with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with all levels of the university community. Applicants must have an earned doctorate (or be nearing completion of their doctorate), a minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching and educational development in postsecondary education, as well as demonstrated expertise in online and blended learning. The incumbent will have a strong track record of teaching in online and blended contexts at the university level. The successful candidate must possess a strong educational development philosophy, and a clear understanding of how to apply these principles and ideas to help strengthen teaching and learning communities, cultures and practices in post-secondary education. Applicants must have knowledge and experience related to helping educators develop and provide evidence of teaching expertise; the ability to plan, implement and evaluate educational development initiatives; and the ability to engage colleagues in meaningful dialogue and decision-making processes about teaching and learning in post-secondary education. Also essential are strong communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated interest and a record of engagement in program evaluation, the scholarship of educational development and/or teaching and learning in post-secondary education. The incumbent must also have a proven track record in building collaborations and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with university administration, academic staff, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and/or staff supporting instruction.
