Job Description:

The Department of Entomology, Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time probationary position at the rank of Instructor II, in the area of Integrated Pest Management, Biological Control, and Insect Ecology (Position 29280) with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2020.


The successful candidate is expected to: deliver intensive field and laboratory summer courses in insect identification, crop-pest identification and field research techniques; teach in introductory entomology courses; support teaching in distance education in the area of applied introductory entomology; develop and teach the course Experimental Methods in Agricultural and Food Sciences (a course that deals with experimental design and data analysis using examples relevant to agricultural, food and human nutritional sciences).

In addition to these teaching requirements the candidate is expected to champion knowledge transfer and communication about Manitoba entomology research to producers and provide entomological extension coordinated through the “Bugline”; provide technical and statistical support to undergraduate students, graduate students, and post docs; assist in the service activities of the Department of Entomology and other duties as assigned.


The successful candidate must possess: a minimum of a M.Sc. in entomology or a closely related field with experience in plant protection entomology, demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, evidence of curriculum development in the area of applied statistics including course delivery using statistical programs such as R or SAS, excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience in the development and/or delivery of field based entomological courses and web-based entomological extension is required.

Administratively, the Department of Entomology resides in the Faculty of Agricultural & Food Sciences, but also delivers a Minor in Entomology providing strong connections with many academic programs across the University. The Department of Entomology is a small unit; collegiality, as well as cooperative and effective interactions with colleagues, support staff and students are essential to its effective operation. Development of good working relationships with other agricultural scientists and entomologists at the University of Manitoba and elsewhere, and with extension entomologists in government and industry is expected. The candidate will be in a Department with 5 tenured or tenure-track professors, and 2 technical support staff as well as several shared administrative support staff. Undergraduate enrolment in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences is approximately 878 students, with the Department of Entomology supporting 12 to 13 graduate students in M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. programs. The undergraduate teaching responsibilities of the department include courses for degree and diploma programs in Agricultural & Food Sciences.
