The School of Journalism, Writing, and Media* in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, invites applications for a tenure-track position, to begin July 1, 2020, with appointment at the rank of Instructor (in UBC’s Educational Leadership stream; see: http://ctlt.ubc.ca/programs/all-our-programs/teaching-and-educational-leadership/).
The School of Journalism, Writing, and Media, a momentous expansion of programs known for their leadership in the fields of journalism and writing studies, offers innovative research and teaching in journalism and media, writing and communication, and knowledge-production and mobilization. The School contributes to the development of new analyses of scholarly and professional communication and new uses of media competencies across and beyond UBC, in Canadian society, and in a global context. The School‘s team of faculty is committed to creating unique opportunities for students to succeed as practiced writers and media professionals in an era of significant shifts in communication technology and culture.
UBC is undergoing exciting changes in writing and communication instruction. The School of Journalism, Writing, and Media will play a lead role in envisioning and implementing these changes. Building on existing initiatives, the successful candidates will work collaboratively to develop and deliver new courses and projects within the School and therefore play crucial roles in shaping the School’s approaches to writing, media, and pedagogy.
The School currently offers two undergraduate courses (WRDS 150 and WRDS 350) that teach research writing to 5,000 students a year. We use writing-in-the-disciplines, genre-based, and discourse analytic approaches informed by current research in the field of rhetoric and writing studies. The successful candidate will teach sections of WRDS 150 and WRDS 350 and new courses as they are developed, both for students in the Faculty of Arts and students from other faculties. Teaching load is 18 credits. Applicants will be expected to:
• demonstrate a record of or potential for high-quality educational leadership, especially in the area of undergraduate curriculum development and renewal
• maintain excellence in teaching
• actively engage in service for The School of Journalism, Writing, and Media
• coordinate multiple sections of first-year writing courses
• play a leading role in the development of new courses, including courses that foster connections between units in the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media
• collaborate, across campus, on university writing initiatives
• contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning in areas of writing studies
Applicants must have a PhD in writing studies or a related sub-field of writing studies (e.g. discourse studies, rhetoric, applied language studies, communications), or a PhD and significant experience teaching writing in university settings (this teaching should be informed by current writing theory). We particularly welcome applications from applicants with cutting-edge methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of (1) public genres, specifically social media genres and (2) writing in disciplines outside the humanities and social sciences.
As this is a tenure-track position, the successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure, and promotion in subsequent years, in accordance with the Collective Agreement. • a teaching dossier that includes: 1) a 500-word (maximum) teaching statement related to the teaching of writing, 2) course evaluations and peer-review of teaching reports if available, 3) examples of pedagogical materials, and 4) examples of any published or unpublished scholarship of teaching and learning,
• a 500-word (maximum) statement of past and potential contributions to educational leadership, including curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning,
• a 500-word (maximum) statement about the applicant’s experience working with a diverse student body and contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion.
