Director, English Language Centre

University of Manitoba

The English Language Centre (ELC) at the University of Manitoba invites applications for the Director position. The anticipated start date is November 1, 2020.

Job Description:
Rank: Instructor I or II (term) in the English Language Centre at the University of Manitoba. The term will be a five-year term.
Start Date: November 1, 2020
Salary Range: Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Position Number: 27909

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the administrative management of the unit. This includes the hiring, supervision, and performance management of ELC staff. In addition to overseeing the day-today operation the Director will play an important role in the recruitment of students to the ELC. This includes identifying and travelling to potential international markets, and working with faculties to identify opportunities with existing students on campus.

Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess a Master’s degree in a closely related field; however, consideration may be given to those with a Bachelor’s degree with significant related experience. The Director should have experience in managing an English language program, preferably related to English for Academic purposes, in the post-secondary environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a substantial operating budget, and experience in managing staff with diverse functions. Knowledge of pedagogical best practices for teaching English for academic purposes would be beneficial. The Director should be an excellent communicator and have the ability to build strong relationships with faculty members, staff, students, and other important stakeholders. In addition, strong communication skills will be important when making presentations to prospective students around the world. The Director must be willing and eligible to travel internationally for extended periods of time, two to three times per year.

The University is located in Winnipeg, the largest city in the province of Manitoba. The city has a rich cultural environment, including the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and a vibrant Indigenous community. The English Language Centre (ELC) offers Academic English programming to students whose first language is not English by providing courses, tests, homestay and individual support to students. Students who successfully complete level 5 of the Intensive Academic English Program at the English Language Centre are deemed to have satisfied the English language proficiency requirements at the University of Manitoba. The Director will provide strategic leadership and direction to the unit and will be responsible for all personnel and budget related matters.
