The Department of Mechanical Engineering has currently 43 professors and 4 faculty lecturers, 27 technical and administrative support staff, several postdoctoral fellows, researchers and research associates. With more than 1,200 students and nearly 300 graduate students, it offers programs, in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and contribute to biomedical engineering. It conducts cutting-edge research in close collaboration with industry in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, aerospace engineering, metallurgical engineering and energy engineering. This position falls within the area of the Institut de valorisation des données (IVADO) in artificial intelligence sponsored by a significant grant of 93,6 M$ over 7 years from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. The selected candidate will benefit from significant starting funds, annual operating funds and specific scholarships from IVADO. For more information, please consult the web site www.ivado.ca.

Major responsibilities
Successful candidates will be expected to carry out the duties of these positions with a dynamic and creative approach. In particular, they will:

•teach undergraduate courses in mechanical and biomedical engineering as well as graduate courses in its area of expertise;
•supervise graduate students;
•initiate and carry out collaborative research with other teams from Polytechnique, the institute IVADO, and other industrial partners;
•contribute to the society at the local, national and international levels

Area of expertise
The department is looking for a professor with excellent knowledge of the principles and techniques of massive data mining, learning and decision-making, as well as a research experience in artificial intelligence, including autonomy, land / air transport systems, innovative manufacturing systems, intelligent robotic systems or other mechanical systems with massive data as a source of decision. Applicants with expertise in the areas of deep learning, data mining and artificial intelligence applied to other areas of mechanical or aerospace engineering would also be considered.

Summer 2019 or as soon as possible.

Essential qualifications
Successful candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering. They must hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related field. They must be registered as an engineer to the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (or another equivalent body in Canada related to the engineering profession) or demonstrate their capacity to become one before applying for tenure. They must demonstrate excellent skills in research and teaching. Since the language of teaching is French, the selected person must have sufficient French speaking and writing ability shortly after taking office.
Conditions of employment

This faculty position is a tenure-track. Salary and benefits will be set in accordance with the collective agreement (http://www.apep.polymtl.ca/pdfs/CC_APEP_2015_2019.pdf).
