Research Associate, Reaction Mechanism and Interrogation

The Hein research group is a multidisciplinary research team merging synthetic organic chemistry with laboratory automation and artificial intelligence. Our research focuses on the investigation of new catalytic reactions aimed toward the understanding and controlling the complexity within these processes. These studies allow us to design new chemistry and chemical processes to enable scalable manufacture of new and valuable molecules. We meet these challenges with either new chemical solutions, such as novel catalysts and reaction conditions, or prototype compound isolations, involving crystallization and separation technology.

This position is focused on developing new applications that use our unique toolkit of robotic analytical hardware. These tools will be linked to machine learning to develop self-driving, closed loops automated laboratory synthesis platforms.

The principal duties of this role include:

· Undertake independent, practical laboratory-based research
· Ongoing collaboration with external stakeholders
· Preparation of regular reports for both internal discussion and external publication
· Formulation of grant reports and proposals
· Design, construct, and test prototype hardware and collaborate with computer science colleagues to adapt code for potential new technologies.
· Oversee and mentor students and team colleagues
· Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal shops and services, external stakeholders, suppliers and manufacturers.

The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

· A PhD in Synthetic Organic/Organometallic Chemistry
· Postdoctoral experience (1+ years) developing and testing process analytical technology
· Proven ability to undertake independent and directed research and prepare high-quality reports and publications, along with experience in the preparation of successful grant proposals
· Demonstrated experience in the practical manipulation of various chemical reactions in benchtop and air-/moisture-sensitive environments
· Experience in the acquisition and analysis of modern spectroscopic, spectrometric, and crystallographic data
· Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate science verbally, visually, and in written form to scientific audiences is highly valued
· Experience in mentoring researchers in relevant chemistry and general scientific research skills
