Research Associate

University of British Columbia

This is a part-time (80%) appointment. The anticipated start date is July 1st, 2023.
This position strengths multidisciplinary research functions in the construction materials testing facility of the University of British Columbia (UBC), focusing on high-performance engineered cementitious composites for repair, rehabilitation, and seismic retrofit applications. The scope of research also includes ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete, low-carbon/net-zero construction materials using industrial and agro wastes, and the performance of composite materials under extreme loadings and events such as earthquake, impact, flood, etc. The research work would also include integrated instrumentation and structural health monitoring with a materials-structures focus, nondestructive testing, sensing technologies, robotic construction, and technology deployments. Specific responsibilities include developing, managing, and conducting high-quality research projects, through collaboration with the faculty members of the Department of Civil Engineering at UBC, consultant companies, and independent research bodies. The Research Associate will engage with practitioners, engineers, and academics; they will work closely with the research assistants, students, and highly qualified laboratory personnel to promote research relevant to the civil engineering materials within the defined scope and to disseminate results.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in civil engineering with a minimum of 4 years relevant research experience in multidisciplinary research projects and applications at the level of the highest international standards as evident by a strong record of research and publications, research project management, writing grant applications, conducting/managing dissemination activities, and leading technology demonstration/deployment activities. Adequate experience in student supervision will be a bonus. They must be able to communicate effectively in written and oral English.
