Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track, Composition

Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Music invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Composition (tenure-track) to start July 1, 2021, subject to budgetary approval. The Composition program at Laurier has a long and distinguished history of facilitating student development in the fundamentals of composition, in the creation of concert music, electronic music, and music for new media, as well as in music improvisation and other modes of performer-composer intersection and collaboration. Many of its graduates have gone on to top-tier graduate schools and beyond into established careers. More recently, the Composition program has added an Integrated Musical Arts (IMA) concentration—a programmatic cluster of courses and experiences that help students expand their creative tool-kit with skills in song writing, composing for different media, concert curating and production, and entrepreneurship. This facet of the program is rich in its intersections with the Faculty’s undergraduate program in Community Music; the expanded programmatic breadth is designed to better prepare students for professional careers as multi-faceted creative musicians.

The Faculty of Music boasts a teaching-learning environment that nurtures a range of artistic voices in an atmosphere of respect for cultural diversity. In keeping with Laurier’s Strategic Plan, which prioritizes building a thriving inclusive community that integrates Indigenous knowledge and practices, the Faculty is committed to further diversifying its curriculum, student body, and faculty complement. To that end, applicants will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to Indigeneity, equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Faculty welcomes applications from composers from equity deserving groups (e.g., racialized communities, persons with disabilities, etc.) and is particularly interested in receiving applications from Indigenous composers, who would bring their own experience and voice to the position.

The successful candidate will have an established profile as a composer and a reputation for being an excellent teacher, with experience teaching studio and classroom composition at the undergraduate level. Given the breadth of the concentrations in which they will be involved, the ideal candidate will also have experience in at least two of the following: music for visual media (dance/film/theatre/ gaming), sound production, electronic music, song writing, improvisation, performance across genres, theory/analysis of non-classical music.

The primary teaching duties of the successful applicant will be to teach undergraduate composition, both individually and in classroom format, to students with varied musical backgrounds and with a range of academic, professional, and non-professional aspirations as composers. The incumbent will also coordinate the Composition program and oversee and modify as appropriate the Integrated Musical Arts (IMA) concentration for students specializing in music creation, production, and performance. Additionally, they are expected to continue to develop as a creative scholar and to contribute to the administrative life of the Faculty and the University. A completed Doctorate by the start of the appointment, ideally in composition, is preferred, but candidates with a Masters degree (or comparable graduate-level credential) in composition, extensive professional experience, and a significant profile as a composer will be considered.
