Tenure-Track Instructor, Physics and Astronomy

Innovative teaching will help the University of Calgary meet its strategic vision to be recognized as a top-five research university within Canada, based on three foundational commitments: to sharpen focus on research and scholarship, to enrich the quality and breadth of learning, and to integrate with the community; and two horizontal cross-cutting themes: student experience and campus culture. The strategy is called Eyes High, inspired by the university's Gaelic motto, which translates as 'I will lift up my eyes.'

In pursuit of this goal, the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure-track, instructor-stream faculty position at the Instructor level. The successful candidate will be required to teach a range of physics and/or astronomy/astrophysics courses at the junior undergraduate level, and possibly senior undergraduate and graduate courses. The successful candidate will teach large introductory-level courses covering the topics of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermal physics and/or general astronomy, will coordinate multi-section offerings of these courses, and will teach laboratory skills to both physics and astrophysics majors as well as to students in other science and engineering disciplines. Instructor-stream faculty workload also includes participation in our pedagogical, course, laboratory, and program development efforts. Specific courses and academic duties within these fields will be assigned by the Department Head based on the teaching needs of the Department.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Physics or closely-related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of teaching experience and those that possess a broad knowledge of Physics education pedagogy. Activity in the field of Physics Education Research is not required but could be viewed as a positive inclusion in an applicant's file. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and a desire to support student learning inside and outside of the classroom.
