The School of Fashion in the Faculty of Communication and Design at Ryerson University (www.ryerson.ca) in the city of Toronto on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Wendat peoples, is pleased to invite applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the area of Fashion Studies with a focus on social justice, decolonization and/or critical race theory. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2019, subject to final budgetary approval. The School of Fashion (https://ryersonfashion.ca/) has a long tradition of nurturing students along their journey to become design and communication leaders in the fashion and creative industries. We offer undergraduate (BDes in Fashion Design and BDes Fashion Communication) and graduate (MA Fashion) programs with a unique focus on diversity, inclusion and sustainability in fashion.
The School is a member of IFFTI (International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes), an organization focused on advancing education and research in fashion design, technology, and business and related industries. Our international academic partners include the University of Arts London, Kingston University, University of Westminster, Amsterdam Fashion Academy, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Fu Jen Catholic University, Nottingham Trent University, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties. The candidate will contribute to our undergraduate (BDes) and graduate (MA) programs through teaching large-lecture, seminar and/or studio courses as well as mentoring and supervising students to support emerging scholars and practitioners in diverse fields.
The candidate will teach in the area of fashion studies and, in particular, at the intersections of fashion and colonialism, decolonization, post-colonial theory and critical race studies and fashion activism. Using this expertise, the successful candidate will take a leadership role in curriculum development within the School and across FCAD in these areas.
The new faculty member will be expected to establish and maintain an independent scholarly, research and creative (SRC) agenda supported by external funding. The new faculty member would also be encouraged to initiate collaborative research opportunities within the university, and among national and international academic institutions and organizations. Collaborations and a record of community engagement with subordinated and marginalized groups, and/or research-based community outreach.
Whilst the Department’s preference is to seek candidates with a PhD (or who are all-but-dissertation) in a relevant discipline with a research focus on colonialism, decolonization, post-colonial theory and/or critical race studies, it also, in recognition of the systemic barriers to higher education, welcomes applications from candidates with a Master’s of Arts in Fashion Studies, Fashion Cultures, Fashion Histories and/or Fashion Theory. Candidates must also demonstrate teaching excellence and community engagement practices.
Candidates must present a record of scholarly research, creative projects and/or community engagement activities. This work may be mobilized through peer-reviewed and juried venues, recognized through grants and awards, and/or strong endorsements by established scholars, creative practitioners or community leaders.
Candidates must show achievement of, or potential for, teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
