Tenure-Track Position with a Specialization Communication and Artificial Intelligence

As part of a major expansion in its programs, the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in Communication & Artificial Intelligence (AI). Building and expanding on our strengths in this area, this position is focused on the use of AI and machine learning (ML) in media and organizations with a particular emphasis on AI/communication studies. The department is looking for potential candidates interested by the social, cultural, political and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence or an understanding of humans/AI interactions in different organizational contexts (e.g. interactions with chatbots, social robots, algorithmic platforms, recommender systems, etc.). The department is looking for candidates leading empirical studies and favoring a critical approach (e.g. responsibility of algorithms, AI in the workplace, governance and regulation of AI) or/and interactional (e.g. analysis of human/AI interactions, human collaboration/AI). Position expected to start July 1, 2022.

Title of the Position: Assistant professor, but higher ranks may be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities revealed by research; c) academic service activities, d) supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
• The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level, in media studies, journalism or organizational communication, in French and in English. A critical aspect of these expectations will be the provision of teaching and mentoring to trainees at the University.
• The candidate will be expected to implement a research program at the intersection of AI and communication resulting in peer reviewed scholarly publications and with the ability to attract, develop, supervise, train and retain excellent trainees, students, and future researchers, including the ability to attract funding to support student research.
• A strong commitment to participate in the administrative activities of the department is required.
• The successful candidate will be expected to exercise leadership in forging research collaborations and in contributing to creating new courses in collaboration with members of the Department focusing on AI-related issues.

Terms: Tenure-track position

Wage: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $87,856 (as of May 1, 2021).

Required Skills:
The successful candidate will be a scholar in Communication & Artificial Intelligence (AI) and will have the following qualifications:

• A doctorate (Ph.D.) in Communication studies or related fields in the humanities and social sciences, by July 1st 2022;
• Evidence of excellence in teaching at a post-secondary institution;
• Evidence of an established and innovative research program and a record of refereed publications and scholarly conferences;
• An ability to attract external funding;
• Active knowledge of French and English will be required at time of tenure (Individual tutoring available for professors), preference will be given to those who can teach in both languages immediately upon hiring;
• The candidate's relevant areas of expertise should include either social, cultural, political and ethical aspects of artificial intelligence or an understanding of human/AI interactions in different organizational contexts (e.g. interactions with chatbots, social robots, algorithmic platforms, recommender systems, etc.). Candidates conducting empirical studies and favoring a critical approach (e.g. responsibility for algorithms, AI in the workplace) or/and interactional (e.g. analysis of human/AI interactions, AI/human collaboration of AI) to AI will be privileged;
• Evidence of a commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion within research and teaching
