As part of its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in education, the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full time Assistant or Associate Professor tenure track position for the nomination of a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Deaf Education, commencing July 1, 2020.
The Faculty of Education Strategic Plan, Education for the Public Good, makes central transformative teaching, learning and leading across all specializations and departments in the Faculty. Home to the Western Canadian Centre for Deaf Studies and the David Peikoff Endowed Chair, the Faculty is already a leader in education for the deaf and hard of hearing and through the Canada Research Chair program, seeks to further strengthen and enhance its efforts in deaf education. Faculty members teaching and researching in the area have strong partnerships with the deaf and hard of hearing community in Edmonton and surrounding areas, work closely with the Alberta School for the Deaf, and contribute to undergraduate and graduate courses in special education. Thus, the Canada Research Chair in Deaf Education will be joining a well-established and supportive community of researchers, scholars and educators.
The successful candidate will have a PhD, will be an emerging leader in his/her field as evidenced by an exceptional record of research, funding, scholarship, teaching and mentorship with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the possibilities, challenges and complexities of education for the deaf and hard of hearing. Individuals with personal experience of deafness or hard of hearing will be of particular interest. The selected candidate will be a leader in fostering and enhancing interdisciplinary and collaborative partnerships that support and advance research and development of Deaf Education locally, nationally and internationally.
The Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) are established by the Canadian Government to foster research excellence (http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/). Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of active research in their field. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The successful applicant will assume a regular appointment as a continuing faculty member July 1, 2020 following nomination by the University for a Canada Research Chair in October 2019. Successful nomination to a CRC position requires approval by the University of Alberta Presidents’ Advisory Committee for Senior Academic Appointments and the Canada Research Chair Program.
The Faculty of Education will support the successful applicant to complete the CRC application. When the completed application has received internal approval, it will be submitted to the CRC Program. Following CRC Program approval, the candidate will take up the Canada Research Chair position.
