The Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics Research.
The UBC Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics (APT) consists of more than 450 physicians, scientists and teaching faculty who provide undergraduate and graduate programs in pharmacology and therapeutics, postgraduate residency programs and fellowships in anesthesiology. The Therapeutic Initiative (TI), established within APT in 1994, consists of fourty (40) faculty members, staff and contractors. The TI has a mission to provide physicians, pharmacists and the provincial pharmacare plan with up-to-date, evidence-based, practical information on prescription drug therapy. The TI conducts systematic reviews of existing drug studies, original pharmacoepidemiologic research with British Columbia’s administrative healthcare databases, and educational interventions with physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, nurses and the public.
This faculty appointment within APT will provide the candidate with opportunities for collaboration with the scientists in the department and the wider Faculty of Medicine scientific community, as well as linkages to relevant research centres and institutes at UBC. Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of APT, the successful candidate will have training in the field of clinical pharmacology and is expected to develop an independent research program in the area of pharmacoepidemiology, health technology assessment, or in the conduct or critical appraisal of clinical trials. The successful candidate will be accountable to the Department Head of APT for overall academic productivity, and for appointment and promotion activities. Day-to-day research and teaching mentoring will be provided by a faculty member serving with the TI. The successful candidate will have access to a unique environment where researchers in basic science and therapeutics converge with academic clincians to ensure a multi-disciplinary research and education approach to clinically relevant problems regarding use of prescription medications. In particular, this position with APT requires a new faculty member to provide critical service and expertise to the TI.
The successful candidate must have one or more of the following:
• An MD degree, eligible for licensure in British Columbia, plus additional research training, and/or;
• An advanced PharmD degree, eligible for licensure in British Columbia, plus additional research training, and/or;
• A PhD with post-doctoral research experience
Additional research training and experience would ideally be demonstrated by the completion of an advanced degree (master’s or doctorate) in a therapeutics-related field such as pharmacology, epidemiology or biostatistics; or completion of a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited residency training program in clinical pharmacology. Candidates specialized in clinical pharmacology with a demonstrated ability to conduct therapeutics research, and with potential and desire to serve in a leadership role with the TI in the future are preferred. Leadership experience or completion of leadership training are considered an asset. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and will be expected to participate in the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching activities, mentorship and training of the unit. The incumbent will also show demonstrated ability in scholarly activity and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
